If you enjoy camping, then may already own some of the essentials, like a tent and couple of sleeping bags. But you might want to consider adding a camping tarp to your gear collection. Many outdoor enthusiasts use a tarp in addition to their tent. Some use the tarp instead of a tent. When deciding which product to purchase, consider what size you need. You should also balance weight and durability. Finally, rate the protection of your choice to make sure it keep you dry and help you stay safe.
A tarp is essentially a tent without walls. They can be used to add extra overhead protection to your tent, or you can choose to sleep under the tarp. Some campers like to set up a tarp adjacent to their tent and use it like an open-air living room. Regardless of how you end up using it, you need to make sure you get the right size. Measure your tent or typical camping area and buy accordingly. In most cases, you'll need something at least five feet by ten feet or greater.
Another point of decision will be the weight of the tarp. This will be determined by the size and the material. Nylon and other synthetic fabrics will weigh less than canvas. Of course, if you never plan to carry the tarp when hiking, then the weight may not be a big deal for you. But keep in mind that lighter tarps will also be easier to erect than heavy, unwieldy fabric.
Finally, rate each of your potential tarps for the protection they offer from wind, sun and rain. A good reflective tarp could keep you cooler; while a waterproof model will help you stay drier in the rain. If you plan on doing any cooking under the tarp, opt for fire retardant material. You wouldn't want to go camping and end up burning your "house" down.
